Continued snowfall challenges drivers

Many Anchorage drivers headed for ditches today as blowing snow on the roads combined with regular ice, black ice, glazed spots and other hazards. The bad conditions persisted into the late afternoon.

There were 97 calls for vehicles-in-distress between midnight and late afternoon, said Anchorage police. But there were only a couple of accidents with injuries.

The ditch-diving picked up beginning a little after 6 a.m., said police spokeswoman Anita Shell. And the calls kept coming as the day wore on.

"There's quite a few on the Glenn, all up and down it. Multiples," she said. But police also responded to calls on Eagle River Road, in Muldoon, on Huffman Road, on Boniface Parkway. "All over town. It's just everywhere."

In the Valley, a semi-truck jackknifed on the Glenn Highway at Moose Creek near Sutton and the highway was closed both directions during morning hours. Alaska State Troopers reported shortly after noon that it had re-opened.

Another accident in late morning at Mile 13.5 of the Old Glenn Highway involved at least two vehicles. One of them pulled a horse trailer with two horses inside. Trooper spokesman Megan Peters said a third vehicle may have also been involved.

Two people were taken to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, one from each of the two main vehicles involved, and one of the horses suffered a broken leg and was euthanized.

The Old Glenn Highway closed at the accident site while the Alaska State Troopers Bureau of Highway Patrol crews marked the scene, about a mile south of Maud Road, and investigated.

Mat-Su Animal Care and Regulation Chief Bob Haskell said one of the two horses in the trailer survived the crash with a few minor cuts and was transported to its owner's home. As to the second horse, the borough veterinarian administered a shot to euthanize the animal at the scene, at the owner's request.

Motorists on many roads around the state battled ice and blowing snow today, including on the Seward, Parks and Richardson highways, the state Department of Transportation reported on its road condition Web site -- 511.alaska.gov.
