He ordered federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the Kodiak Island Borough. The declaration makes state and eligible local governments and private nonprofit organizations eligible for federal help paying for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged during the storm and resulting flooding and mudslides.
The mid-October storm, which contributed to one of the rainiest days on record in Kodiak, led to landslides and erosion that clogged culverts and washed out roads. Heavy rains and flooding continued through the month. The state declared it a disaster area in November.
Dolph Diemont was named the federal coordinating officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area. Additional disaster designations may be made later if the state requests them and if they're warranted by the results of further damage assessments.
