With Bethel 'wet,' crime up in villages, officers say

Link: The Tundra Drums Alcohol-related crime is up in communities in the Bethel area, say village public safety officers. They're blaming Bethel voters' decision in October to change the city from "damp" to "wet," even though no new liquor licenses have been awarded and the city may be facing a new vote on the issue soon. But restrictions on private booze imports are gone, and someone, officers say, is re-selling large amounts of alcohol in dry villages. "There's a lot of sleepless nights for us," said Roman Daniel, a village officer in Nunapitchuk. The VPSOs are reporting an increase in assaults, domestic violence and snowmachine DUIs, though they say they don't yet have hard crime statistics to back up their observations.
