Chugach paying retained profits to members

The Chugach Electric Association board has approved paying members from 1989 nearly $1.7 million in retained profits from that period. The Anchorage-based customer-owned power company typically retains profits for about two decades for internal use. Chugach said it began mailing checks for these capital credits on Dec. 10 to retail members of record from 1989 who no longer are members. Most who are still members will receive credits on their accounts instead of checks, Chugach said.

Current members may check the status of their capital-credits accounts online at www.chugachelectric.com. Past and present members may receive information about their capital-credits accounts by calling 563-7366. Chugach is the largest electric utility in Alaska.

2 firms achieve high management standards

Alaska Frontier Constructors Inc. and Nanuq Inc. of Anchorage and Prudhoe Bay have achieved an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certificate, an OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety Management System certificate and an ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System certificate for their development and implementation of a project management structure for heavy civil construction projects. The certifications were issued by SRI Quality System Registrar, an internationally accredited Pittsburgh-based firm that evaluates and audits management system standards.

According to SRI officials, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certification "provides evidence to customers, suppliers, employees and to nearby communities of the commitment by (these companies) to meet their environmental and health and safety responsibilities," and ISO 9000 certification "demonstrates effective implementation of a Quality Management System and providing customer satisfaction."
