TALKEETNA -- Alaska State Troopers dismantled a methamphetamine laboratory in downtown Talkeetna early Wednesday, according to the Alaska Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Enforcement.
Troopers arrested the homeowner, Jennifer R. Spain, 48, and Michael D. Halla, 27, on multiple charges of misconduct involving a controlled substance, according to investigators. Troopers executed a search warrant at the home off I Street about 2:50 a.m. Wednesday, when they found an active meth lab using the "one pot" method of production, troopers said. While other methods of making meth require hours of heating the ingredients, the one-pot method allows people to produce the drug in about 30 minutes nearly anywhere by mixing ingredients in a plastic bottle or container, according to the Department of Justice. Because the one-pot method is easier and faster than others, local methamphetamine producers are increasingly using it, according to the Justice Department. Spain and Halla were booked into the Mat-Su Pretrial facility in Palmer. Halla's bail was set at $20,000, while Spain's was set at $15,000.
