A convicted rapist was sentenced this week to serve more than 32 years in prison for the brutal 2007 rape of an elderly man, according to the district attorney.

Anchorage resident Romeo Iyapana, 22, was previously convicted of multiple counts of sexual assault and assault in the attack.

Prosecutors say Iyapana perpetrated the "violent and traumatic" assault on an elderly friend of his mother's in September 2007. Iyapana choked the man and sexually assaulted him, according to prosecutors.

State Superior Court Judge Jack Smith said at sentencing that Iyapana showed little or no remorse for what he had done. He was sentenced to a total of 42.5 years in prison and ordered to serve 32.5, prosecutors said.

Iyapana was also ordered on probation for 15 years and will have to register as a sex offender for life.
