The Mat-Su Borough is celebrating its Sixth annual Winter Trails Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the parking lot at Mile 10.6 Hatcher Pass Road. At the family-friendly event, people can test out cross-country skis and snowshoes for free and learn proper techniques in classes held throughout the day.
Hot refreshments and restrooms will be provided, along with a warming barrel. Classes start at 10:30 a.m. with a one-hour beginner cross-country ski class. An hour-long beginning snowshoe class will follow at 11:30 a.m. A beginning snowboard class runs from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., followed by a half-hour avalanche beacon demonstration. From 2 to 2:30 p.m. will be a skijoring demonstration, followed by a half-hour beginner downhill skiing class at 2:30 p.m. On the upper mountain, Alaska State Park rangers will meet at the Rescue Cache at noon for a one-hour tour of the cache, with refreshments. From 1 to 2 p.m. a beginner skate-skiing clinic will be held on the upper mountain with Mat-Su Ski Club instructors. Parking is free all day at Hatcher Pass. The event is coordinated by the Mat-Su Borough and sponsored by Mat-Su Borough Parks, Winter Trails, REI, Mat-Su Trails Council, Pioneer Ski Patrol, Alaska Trails, Alaska State Parks and the Mat-Su Ski Club.
