Coast Guard officials began responding to the report about 6:40 p.m. after Adak Petroleum personnel reported the No. 2 diesel fuel was leaking from the tank into Sweeper Cove, Coast Guard officials said late Monday.

Adak Petroleum officials told the Coast Guard the fuel is contained by a boom in the cove and its crew is working to clean it up, the Coast Guard said.

Coast Guard and Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation officials plan to fly to far-flung Adak, in the Aleutian Islands, today (Tuesday) to investigate the cause of the spill, its size and to supervise the cleanup efforts.
