Arctic Valley opens, also has new terrain: a beer and wine bar

While the new halfpipe was the attraction south of town, powder -- and hops -- was the pull to the north. An estimated 120 snow lovers turned out for the opening of the Arctic Valley Ski Area on Saturday -- and found that not all liquid was frozen.

Alan Heckart, president of the Anchorage Ski Club, said his organization on Friday received final paperwork from the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, allowing the club to serve beer upstairs in the lodge at the top of Arctic Valley Road.

"The new bar is fairly amazing, built and donated by a volunteer," he said, noting that the area's recreational license mandates they stop serving one hour after the lifts stop running. "It really pulls folks together at the end of the day, and there's a good view of the hill as well."

While Alyeska is open daily, Arctic Valley won't reopen until Saturday -- for skiing or drinking.
