JUNEAU -- Gov. Sean Parnell says Alaska must confront the "private evil" of domestic violence and sexual assault. Parnell has made a crack-down on abuse a centerpiece of the legislative agenda for the coming year. Among other things, he says he wants to increase funding for shelters, put new public safety officers in villages and make it mandatory for sex offenders who are registered in other states and move to Alaska to register here as well.
Parnell said the issue is personal; in his State of the State address Wednesday, he said he knows change is possible because he's seen it happen across generations of his own family.
