Assembly postpones action on Begich audit proposal

The Anchorage Assembly this evening postponed until Feb. 16 consideration of a proposal to order an independent audit of some financial information given the Assembly and others by the administration of former Mayor Mark Begich in 2008.

Three Assembly members -- Dan Coffey, Debbie Ossiander and Jennifer Johnston -- are pushing for an audit as follow-up to reports sent to the Assembly by municipal attorney Dennis Wheeler. Wheeler questions the accuracy of some statements about city finances made by the Begich administration in its waning months.

The audit proposal was scheduled to be considered tonight, but Assembly chairman Patrick Flynn said he was still working on some compromise language for the resolution.
