Anchorage telecom company GCI said its Alaska customers might have temporary outages in cable TV, Internet and long-distance phone service from Feb. 21 through March 9 as the sun interferes with satellite communications. During those dates, the sun's path "takes it directly behind the satellite and in line with the antenna on the ground," overwhelming the satellite signal, GCI said.
"If a cable TV outage occurs, viewers will notice a slow degradation of picture for up to 10 minutes, followed by several minutes of total disruption. The picture then slowly clears," the company said.
Service provided to customers over fiber-optic cables and microwaves won't be affected, GCI said.
