The measure would allow the attorney general to subpoena phone, bank and other records that are connected to an Internet account suspected of being used in exploiting children.
That provision was added in the House Judiciary Committee; the committee chairs weren't immediately available for comment Thursday afternoon. The full measure is moving to another committee.
Jeffrey Mittman, the executive director of the ACLU of Alaska, said sex offenders must be prosecuted. But he said a system is already in place that allows attorneys to get court orders for records.
He said the state constitution has strong privacy protections and this measure would violate those.
