The story on the 'Nude in the Library' show

The Daily News won't be publishing images from artist Don Mohr's current show in the Arc Gallery, and the title of the show suggests why. "Nude in the Library" is a series of photos taken in the UAA/APU Consortium Library of an unclad female model posing in various locations, next to shelves, against the wall, in the reference section.

Mohr told me he had no trouble getting permission and cooperation from the library staff, who let him have the run of the place after hours. "They even alerted security about what we'd be doing," he said.

Good idea.

But if taking the photos wasn't a problem, displaying them at the library was. The Arc Gallery space is right next to the main inside doors of the library, so discreetly positioned that people pass by never knowing it's an art space. Nonetheless, library authorities were concerned that people could see the pictures from the hall as they walked by.

So Mohr came up with an ingenious solution. He photocopied pages from some scholarly volume on nude art and created a screen with them. To get to the photos, arrayed along the inside wall, you walk through a kind of mini-labyrinth.

The black-and-white photos are for sale, as is a book of the photographs -- the perfect gift for the friend or relative who loves books, but doesn't like to read. Information is available at the exhibit, which remains on display through March 8.

Off to the Olympics

Anchorage percussionist and all-around musician Steven Alvarez will perform at the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, B.C., on Tuesday night.

He will be playing with Valerie Naranjo, a percussionist with the Saturday Night Live band, and Pura Fe Crescioni from the Native American women's a cappella group Ulali.

Not sure whether that will be viewable on local television, but you can also catch him next weekend at the Egan Center.

Alvarez is helping to organize "Dance in Pursuit of Dreams," a multicultural music and dance performance with a variety of Alaska, Native American and Hawaiian performers along with classical dance. He will be joining on drums and vocals.

The program is presented by Anchorage Fur Rendezvous and the Alaska Native Heritage Center at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 26-28. Tickets are $20.

Plug your favorite artist

The Rasmuson Foundation is now accepting on-line nominations from the public for this year's Distinguished Artist Award. As noted previously in the Daily News, there's a somewhat streamlined process now in place. Artists may be nominated by members of the public and can also nominate themselves.

The new form, available at www.rasmuson.org is a simple, one-page submission asking for contact information and 300 choice words promoting the nominee as the next recipient of the $25,000 award. Completed forms can be submitted online. Or the form can be printed out and mailed in.

Hard copy nominations may be mailed to Rasmuson Foundation, 301 W. Northern Lights Blvd., Suite 400, Anchorage 99503. These must be postmarked no later than Monday, March 1. Online nominations must be submitted by 5 p.m. No late applications will be accepted.

Teen art deadline extended

The deadline for entries in the "Make Art, Not Babies" art contest sponsored by the State Department of Health and Social Services' section of Women's, Children's and Family Health and the Youth Alliance for a Healthier Alaska has been extended to Thursday.

Alaska teens between the ages of 14 and 19 can submit original "PG-13" appropriate art in two categories -- video/radio or photography/graphic art -- depicting what it means to have a healthy teen relationship and to promote sexual responsibility, according to a press release.

Cash prizes are being rewarded for the top three entries in each category.

The winning entries will be used as part of a statewide campaign to promote healthy teen relationships. More information and contest rules are available at www.hss.state.ak.us/dph/wcfh/yaha.htm.
