Through a staffer, the Kodiak Republican introduced an amendment Monday in the Senate Education Committee to eliminate a 6-year post-high school eligibility period.

Education Commissioner Larry LeDoux and Executive Director Diane Barrans of the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education told the committee nontraditional students are outside the scope of the governor's proposal and that the change would drive up costs.

Gov. Sean Parnell is seeking a $400 million set aside from which investment earnings would help provide in-state tuition and professional scholarships for students meeting certain grade and course requirements. The committee did not act on the amendment.
