Strohmeyer died Wednesday of heart failure at his winter home in Crystal River, Fla.
He taught at the University of Alaska Anchorage and was author of the book, "Extreme Conditions: Big Oil and the Transformation of Alaska," published in 1993.
He edited the former Bethlehem Globe-Times newspaper from 1956 to 1984, winning journalism's highest honor for his editorial campaign to reduce racial tensions in Bethlehem.
Later, he wrote books on the decline of the steel industry and the development of the Alaskan oil industry. He also taught at Lehigh University and the University of Alaska.
He's survived by his wife, a son, a daughter and eight grandchildren. His first wife died in 2000, and a son died in 1998.
