Two people are dead and five others injured following a multivehicle collision this afternoon near Cantwell along the Parks Highway, according to state officials.

The crash involved a Hyundai Sonata and a GMC truck on the Parks Highway just north of Hurricane Gulch about 1:30 p.m., according to Alaska State Troopers.

Two of four people inside the Hyundai were killed in the wreck, and the other two were flown to hospitals with serious injuries, according to troopers. They have not been identified pending notification of their families, troopers spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said.

Three people in the GMC were also injured in the crash, she said. The driver, 68-year-old Ann Peeples of Palmer and passenger Deborah Gilcrest, 51, of Anchorage, were flown out, Ipsen said. The third passenger, Doris Thomas, 41, of Palmer, was also taken to a hospital, she said.

Details on how the crash took place weren't immediately available.

Ipsen said troopers were preparing at about 7 p.m. to open one lane of the highway to limited traffic.
