Donna Vaughn, 56, of Palmer, and Coral Hammond, 14, of Fairbanks, died at the scene of the wreck, which left five others injured, troopers said.

Troopers say Ann Peeples, 68, of Palmer, had been driving a 2005 GMC Truck north on the Parks Highway and was rounding a downhill right-hand corner when she lost control of the truck and slid into the southbound lane at Mile 176. Roads were icy in the area, troopers said.

The truck crashed head-on into a southbound 2006 Hyundai Sonata. Vaughn was in the front passenger seat with Hammond behind her, troopers said. Vaughn's husband, Donald Vaughn, 60, of Palmer, and another granddaughter, Maziy Hammond, 7, of Fairbanks, were injured but survived, troopers said.

Peeples and her passengers, Deborah Gilcrest, 51, of Anchorage, and Doris Thomas, 41, of Palmer, were also transported to hospitals for treatment of their injuries.

No citations had been issued Friday, troopers said.
