WILLOW -- A snowmachiner from Houston fell through the ice on the Susitna River on Saturday afternoon and Alaska State Troopers say he is missing and is presumed to have drowned. Troopers identified the man as Scott Aslakson, 51.
Troopers received a call around 3 p.m. reporting that he had gone through the ice near Deshka Landing on his snowmachine and didn't emerge, said Megan Peters, spokeswoman for troopers. Troopers searched with a plane and a helicopter to try to spot the man in the river or under the ice and searchers also used snowmobiles and water craft. The effort included wildlife troopers and the Mat-Su Water Rescue Team. Troopers said Aslakson drove over an embankment, then fell through the ice into open water. "They were able to locate the snowmachine but not the snowmachiner," Peters said. Peters said she believed the current was too strong for divers to go in.
