The pilot of a home-built airplane was killed in a crash near Eklutna, authorities said Sunday. An investigation was under way into what happened and when. The pilot's name hasn't been disclosed. The crew of an Alaska Railroad train spotted wreckage in the railroad right-of-way around 8 a.m. Sunday at Mile 138.8, in the Eklutna-Birchwood area, said Clint Johnson, senior air safety investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board.

The pilot's body was found in the wreckage, he said.

Investigators from the NTSB and FAA were called to the scene. They are theorizing that the plane went down on Saturday and wasn't discovered until Sunday morning, but aren't certain, Johnson said. They hope to move the wreckage to a hangar to inspect it more closely.

Johnson described the plane as an experimental, home-built craft. Registration information for the plane shows it to be an Antares MA-32, an ultralight craft.
