Tommy Robert Thomas is expected to survive, Anchorage police said.
At about 12:15 a.m., Thomas went to his ex-girlfriend's home in the 800 block of East 73rd Avenue. He was mad about a custody battle involving their child. Thomas acted aggressively and she told him to leave, police say.
When he refused, she fired a warning shot into the floor. Witnesses say Thomas then began to come toward her. She fired two shots. One bullet hit his leg. The other hit him just under his armpit.
The ex-girlfriend's name has not been released. She and two witnesses were taken to police headquarters for questioning. Police are working with the district attorney's office to decide if charges will be filed.
The woman had a temporary six-week restraining order against Thomas, which had expired March 5. He had already been arrested on Feb. 6 for violating the order.
According to court records, Thomas has several convictions for assault.
