JUNEAU -- State Sen. Albert Kookesh has written a letter of apology to the city of Craig for comments he made at a January council meeting.
A legislative committee determined Kookesh violated ethics laws by implying he would trade his influence on state-funded Craig projects for a council vote that would benefit Sealaska Corp. in a land deal. The Angoon Democrat is chairman of the Native corporation's board. The ethics committee ordered Kookesh to write a letter of apology to the city council and provide copies to all legislators, news media in his district and others who requested it. The Prince of Wales Island community has received the letter, and some officials are ready to move on. Council member Jim See told the Juneau Empire: "We got the letter; it's over."
