Eagle's 45 points highlight openers

The stars came out Thursday for the first round of the Class 1A girls state basketball tournament at Sullivan Arena.

Several players turned in big games, some in winning efforts, some in games in which their team fell short. The best of the best: Kandace Carroll pumped in 45 points for Fort Yukon and Raissa Boskofsky pulled down 17 rebounds, 10 of them offensive, for Port Lions.

Alak 50, Shaktoolik 49

Allison Segevan scored on a putback with 2:05 remaining to lift Alak to a 50-49 victory over Shaktoolik. The play gave Segevan 11 points and 11 rebounds and made her one of two Huskies with a double-double. Rhoda Aguvluk led the way with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Michelle Saccheus paced Shaktoolik with 20 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals.

The back-and-forth game featured nine ties and eight lead changes.

Kwethluk 58, Kivalina 52

Josephine George's 10 points and 12 rebounds and Twyla George's 19 points carried Kwethluk past Kivalina 58-52.

Sabrina Barger turned in a 17-point, 13-rebound performance for Kivalina, which won the rebounding battle 45-38 but was guilty of 30 turnovers.

Tuluksak had no answer for all-state player Carroll, whose 45 points were almost twice as many as the Wolverines managed.

Tuluksak pestered Fort Yukon with 16 steals but was hurt by 19 fouls (Fort Yukon had six) and 20 percent shooting.

The only other double-figure scorer was Leanne Jackson, who led the Wolverines with 12.

Port Lions 56, Russian Mission 21

Port Lions produced three players who scored in double figures and two who registered double figures in rebounds in a 56-21 victory over Russian Mission.

Cierra Robustellini tallied 13 points and 13 rebounds, Katie Strong had 12 points, Marquee Strong added 12 points and Raissa Boskofsky hauled down 17 rebounds for the Kings. Boskofsky and Robustellini helped the winners to a big 69-34 advantage on the boards.

Denise Kozevnikoff's 12 points led the Raiders.
