Two nominated for fisheries council

Gov. Sean Parnell has nominated Duncan Fields of Kodiak and James Hubbard ofSeward for seats on the North Pacific Fishery Management Council. The governor also forwarded Sam Cotten of Eagle River and Matt Moir of Kodiak as alternate nominees.

They will be considered for the council by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce.

The council has jurisdiction over 900,000 square miles of ocean from three to 200 miles off Alaska's shores and the primary responsibility for managing halibut, pollock, cod and other groundfish.

Fields is a commercial fisherman completing his first term on the council.

Hubbard has fished commercially since the 1970s. He co-owns J&R Fisheries, which markets seafood.

Cotten also is completing a term on the council.
