The National Park Service is taking action to protect wolf and bear populations within three preserves in the Interior. As of today, the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve will be off-limits to hunters and trappers wanting to kill wolves and bears. The agency said the Yukon-Charley wolf population has declined 43 percent. It includes the loss of an entire pack killed by state biologists enforcing predator control outside the preserve.
The temporary closure runs through May 31.
The Gates of the Arctic National Preserve and Denali National Preserve also will be closed to the taking of black bear sows and cubs at den sites while using artificial light -- hunting practices that were recently approved by the state Board of Game.
