In a little more than two years the wolf population has dropped from 147 to 59. That's a 60 percent decline.

Biologists said subsistence and sport hunting play a role, but the majority of wolf deaths have been from natural causes.

John Quinley of the National Park Service said moose, caribou and sheep populations have been fairly stable, so the decline in wolves is a mystery.
