Freshman goalkeeper Griffin Toomey came in cold off the bench in the second half Wednesday to stop a penalty kick and preserve South High's 1-0 boys soccer victory over Juneau at Anchorage Football Stadium.
With the Wolverines (6-0-2) ahead 1-0 on the strength of Max Mills' first-half goal in the 16th minute on the nonconference match, South senior goalie Alex Toomey, Griffin's brother, received a yellow card after a collision that also resulted in Juneau being awarded a penalty shot. The yellow card meant Alex Toomey, who has surrendered two goals this season, had to momentarily leave the match. Enter his younger bro. Griffin Toomey dove to his left to rebuff the penalty kick and maintain the Wolverines' clean sheet. Alex Toomey soon went back into goal. Wasilla 3, Grace Christian 0 Wasilla High scored twice in the opening five minutes Wednesday night to get the jump on Grace Christian in a 3-0 boys soccer victory at Dimond's Alumni Field. Jake Barber and Kyler Perry scored the early goals for the Warriors. Paul Sliwa added a goal near game's end on a penalty kick.
