Alaska Sound Celebration, an Anchorage-based women's barbershop-style chorus, won the regional competition held in Atwood Concert Hall on April 24. The 70-voice ensemble led by Karen Leet and Peggy McBride, competed against six other groups from Alaska and Washington state. They will represent the region at the Sweet Adelines International World Championships in Houston, Texas, in 2011. They were also the regional champions two years ago.
Two choirs from Washington finished in second and third place, the Olympia Chorus and the Spirit of Spokane, respectively.
In quartet competition, held on Friday, the winner was LiveWire, from the Puget Sound area, followed by two Alaska quartets, Backbeat and Monaco. An estimated 400 singers were in town to take part in the contest.
