Governor Sean Parnell signs Senate Bill 277 into law, which exempts from regulation facilities that generate electricity entirely from renewable energy resources when that electricity is sold to regulated utilities, during a signing ceremony atop the Kincaid Park Chalet on Wednesday, June 2, 2010. The signing of SB 277 was witnessed by (from left) CIRI vice presidents Ethan Schutt and Barbara Donatelli, CIRI president and CEO Margie Brown, Reps. Charisse Millett and Harry Crawford, Sens. Hollis French, Lesil McGuire, and Johnny Ellis. Gov. Parnell also signed SB 243, which encourages exploration for and development of Alaska's geothermal energy potential, and it moves jurisdiction over the permitting and inspection of geothermal wells and operations from the Dept. of Natural Resources to the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. CIRI plans to install 34 wind turbines on Fire Island and expects to be producing electricity by the summer 2012.
