Brush fire burns small building in Butte

A five-acre brush fire broke out in Butte on Friday afternoon and burned one outbuilding before being brought under control, according to the state Division of Forestry. Another fire flared up at Point MacKenzie later in the day and was going strong but not threatening any buildings Friday evening, a spokesman said.

The fire in Butte, off Bodenburg Loop, was reported about 4:20 p.m. Forestry and local firefighters attacked the fire from the ground, while a helicopter hit it from above. By 6:30 p.m., it was contained but still burning after torching one outbuilding, possibly a shed, the division said.

The MacKenzie fire was reported about 5:15 p.m. and was actively burning 1 1/2 acres. Crews had dropped one load of retardant on the fire as crews fought it on the ground. No structures were in immediate danger.

The causes of both fires remained under investigation.
