State epidemiologist Joe McLaughlin says the virus did not strike Alaska as hard as feared this winter.

He credits the availability of antiviral medications and a campaign to promote basic healthy habits.

The last known death attributed to the swine flu in Alaska happened in early February. The 44-year-old Homer woman also had pneumonia.

In all, 13 Alaskans have died from swine flu.
