Land lottery offers remote sites in northern, Southcentral Alaska

May 23, 2010

Alaskans are being offered a chance to participate in the state's 2010 lottery for remote cabin sites. The state department of Natural Resources is offering 155 sites to stake in four areas of northern and Southcentral regions.

Officials say the lottery allows eligible Alaskans to stake a parcel of state land, lease it until surveys and appraisals are complete, then buy it at fair market value.

According to officials, the parcels being offered are best reached by boat or airplane.

Would-be participants have until 5 p.m. June 1 to apply for the June 18 lottery. There is a $25 filing fee for each staking site.
