AROUND THE HORN

-- The Kenai Peninsula Oilers took the league opener 2-1 over the Anchorage Bucs at Mulcahy Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Bucs mounted a ninth-inning charge, but fell just short against the Oiler's hard-throwing closer Kyle Barraclough. Barraclough struck out two in the ninth, but also allowed three base runners and one unearned run.

The Oilers scored both their runs on back-to-back doubles. They took the lead 1-0 in the fifth inning and tacked on the second run in the eighth inning.

The Oiler's Zach Belts earned the win; he was the second of four pitchers used. Barraclough recorded the save. Casey Haupman took the loss for the Bucs.

-- Mat-Su's Bret Schwartz went 2 for 3 with two runs scored from the lead-off spot, helping the Miners beat the Anchorage Glacier Pilots 3-2 at Hermon Brothers Field in an exhibition game.

The game ended in the bottom of the seventh when Schwartz singled, stole second and advanced to third on an error, then scored on a single by Tyler Ruch.

Gage Smith earned the win for the Miners and Justin Kemp took the loss for the Pilots. Eric Holmes started for the Miners and gave up one earned run, striking out three in five innings.
