Cheney Lake rainbow trout fishing

First fish

Billy Green, Vice President of Production for Copper River Seafoods, delivered the first Copper River salmon of the season to chef/owners Patrick Hoogerhyde an Al Levinson of Bridge Restaurant on Friday morning May 18, 2012. A 30 pound king salmon, in photo, caught by Copper River Seafoods partner Pip Fillingham and a 7 pound sockeye were the first fish delivered and will be served at dinner service in the evening.

The first Copper River salmon were flown to Anchorage and Seattle Friday, May 18, 2012.

Fishing Fun

A hooked fish is headed into the net at the Great Alaska Sportsman Show Friday March 30, 2012 at Ben Boeke Ice Arena. Students from the Anchorage School District life skills programs were treated to fishing and exhibits on animals and fish Friday morning prior to public opening courtesy of the show, Safari Club International - Alaska Chapter, the Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game and the school district.

200-pound-plus fish hit Homer docks

A dismal first week of June turned around over the weekend when three 200-pound-plus halibut crowded atop the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby monthly leader board. Ralph Budai of Batavia, Ohio, brought in a 236-pound fish on Saturday to grab the June lead in Alaska's biggest fish derby. He caught the fish with captain Lloyd Gailey of Knotilus Charters.

A day later, Steven Lavasseur of Andover, Minn., brought in a 225-pounder, caught with captain Brian Nollar of Midnight Sun Charters.

Kent Wood of California took over third with a 210-pound halibut, while hometown angler Pam Hanshaw's 120-pounder leads the women anglers.

The 248-pounder caught May 21 by Jesus "Skip" Torres of Elmendorf Air Force Base continues to hold the overall lead.

Anglers bringing in beefy Ship Creek fish

While Chaunti Hall continued to hold the lead in the Ship Creek Slam'n Salm'n King Salmon Derby with her 42.9-pound giant, more big fish found their way onto the leader board Monday.

Rod Troll moved into second place in the pro class with 35.8-pounder landed this morning. If he hangs onto second, Troll will win $200 and a slew of other prizes.

Meanwhile late Sunday, Rick Helton took over the lead among adult men with a 33.6-pounder.

Anchorage's 10-day derby, run by the Downtown Soup Kitchen, continues through Sunday afternoon. Tickets are available at the derby shack near the Ulu Factory.

One $40 pro-class ticket, good for the entire derby, is enough to feed one soup kitchen client for a month. Cheaper day tickets are available.
