AROUND THE HORN

• With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, in a non-league game about to be called due to rain, the Peninsula Oilers' Jeff Popick struck out looking at an inside curve ball, ending the game against the Heroes of the Diamond in a 2-2 tie Wednesday night at Oiler Park in Kenai.

The Oilers didn't get a hit in the bottom of the eighth inning but still managed to load the bases with two outs before Popick struck out.

The Oilers forged an early 2-0 lead behind starting pitcher Kellen Moen, who struck out six in the first three innings, before giving up two solo home runs in the top of the fifth.

The game was the first of a scheduled doubleheader. The second game was canceled.

• The Anchorage Bucs' Casey Hauptman dominated the Athletes in Action Fire in a 10-1 win at Mulcahy on Wednesday.

Hauptman allowed two hits over six innings, at one point retiring 12 batters in a row.

The Bucs' Coley Crank drove in two runs in the fourth and Zach Vincej did the same with a triple in the fifth, giving the Bucs a 6-0 lead.

The Bucs sent nine men to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring four runs and taking a 10-1 lead.

The Bucs totaled 12 hits with Cam Schiller going 3 for 4.

• The Fairbanks Goldpanners used a three-run seventh and a two-run eighth inning to seal a comeback 7-5 win over the Mat-Su Miners, who committed six errors in their first league loss.

The Panners' comeback started in the seventh, when they trailed 5-2 but had seven straight batters reach base safely -- two reached by Miners' throwing errors. The Panners grabbed the lead when Matt Mardesich led off with a double and scored on a single by DJ Crumlich.

Ryan Cabral earned the win for Fairbanks, going 5 2/3 shutout innings and striking out six. Liam Baron recorded the save.
