Robert Gum, 19, and 21-year-old Deanna Scaglione, aka Deanna Powers, are scheduled to be sentenced in state court on Sept. 22. They will be sentenced in federal court on Sept. 2.
Investigators say the pair attacked the Native man while he was walking toward Bean's Café, a soup kitchen, on July 28, 2009. They pelted him with eggs, threw a water bottle at him, and shouted racial slurs. They asked the man if he wanted to get shot, and said they were going to cut him and hit him with a bat, according to the district attorney's office.
At first they pursued him in their car, turning around to toss objects at him again when they missed. Then they got out near C Street and Seventh Avenue and ran after him on foot.
The man was not seriously injured.
Investigators learned of the attack after Powers bragged about posting a videotape of it on YouTube. The tape shows her and Gum taking turns at filming each other during the attack. A Crime Stoppers tip led police to the evidence.
