A parade float belonging to the gay rights organization Imperial Court of All Alaska was destroyed Friday in an early morning fire, according to the organization and the Anchorage Fire Department. The blaze on East Ninth Avenue was reported at 5:42 a.m. and was put out within about 25 minutes, the fire department said.

It started in a garage and spread to a nearby duplex, the department said. The float was in a car tent in front of the garage. The float had been used in a gay pride parade last weekend and was being readied for the Fourth of July parade.

A fire department spokeswoman said the fire is being called suspicious and is under investigation.
