AROUND THE HORN

• The Miners scored runs in five of the first six innings en route to an 8-2 victory over the Pilots that kept Mat-Su atop the league standings with the Goldpanners. It wasn't until the fourth inning that the Miners took the lead for good, breaking a 2-2 tie by scoring two runs on an error, a pair of singles and a pair of sacrifice bunts.

The Pilots torched starter Robert Benincasa for two runs in the second and chased him in the third, but reliever Kirk Jewasko pitched six scoreless innings, striking out five and scattering two hits, for the win.

Andy Mee anchored Mat-Su's offense with three hits, including two doubles and an RBI.

• The Fairbanks Goldpanners became the first team to win 20 games this season, beating the Athletes in Action Fire 6-5 at Growden Memorial Park on Friday night.

The Fire loaded the bases in the top of the ninth inning, but hit into a game-ending double play.

The critical sequence of plays came in the bottom of the eighth when the Goldpanners' Kevin Roundtree capitalized on a big mistake by the Fire. His at-bat was extended when the Fire failed to catch his foul pop-up. A couple pitches later, Roundtree hit a soft two-RBI single to right field, giving the Goldpanners the 6-5 lead.

Kyle Brule pitched the ninth inning for the save.

• The Peninsula Oilers kicked off a three-game homestand against the Bucs by edging Anchorage 4-3. Cody Kendall picked up the victory and Jorge Marban recorded his first save of the season.

Down by two after eight innings, the Bucs scored a run in the ninth, but their rally came up short.
