AROUND THE HORN

The Anchorage Bucs took the first game of a doubleheader 8-5 over the Fairbanks Goldpanners at Mulcahy Stadium on Wednesday.

The Bucs' Jimmy Appleby and Ryan Pineda each hit RBI singles in the bottom of the third inning to give the Bucs a 4-3 lead. Mark Joukoff pitched seven innings for the complete-game win, allowing all three of the Goldpanners' runs to score in the first inning.

The Bucs roughed up Goldpanners' Kyle Richter in his ABL debut and knocked the Goldpanners out of first place, winning the second game of the doubleheader 5-1.

Richter allowed five earned runs and didn't record a strikeout in 4 13 innings.

The Bucs' Ray Hernandez pitched a seven-inning complete game, struck out two and improved to 2-1.

The Mat-Su Miners came though with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Athletes in Action Fire 3-2 in Wasilla.

The Miners' Matt Wessinger nailed an RBI single to tie the game 2-2 and then Tyler Ruch brought Kevin Whitehead home on a sacrifice fly to end the game. Gage Smith pitched the final two innings to earn the win. Geoffrey Davenport pitched the first seven innings, striking out nine, walking none and giving up one earned run.

The Peninsula Oilers won their seventh straight game, beating the Anchorage Glacier Pilots 9-6 at Oiler Park in Kenai.

Tyler Grimes hit a three-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning, highlighting a six-run inning for the Oilers.

The Pilots led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but the lead vanished when Grimes hit his bases-clearing double, putting the Oilers up 4-3.
