A 17-year-old boy in Kake reported this morning that he had been attacked by a bear as he walked along the road, according to Alaska State Troopers.
Brandon Berkley told the Village Public Safety Officer that he had been walking near the Four Squares church below the high school when he saw two cubs but no sow, troopers said.
The black bear sow then "came out of nowhere and slapped him on his left side," troopers said. Berkley told authorities that he tried to defend himself but was thrown into a ditch.
He reported that he was knocked unconscious after being tossed. When he woke up, the bear was gone and he walked to the clinic, troopers said. Staff at the clinic didn't find any major injuries, troopers said.
Authorities are asking members of the community to be on the lookout for the bears, troopers said.
