Assembly delays liquor ID decision

The Anchorage Assembly postponed until Aug. 17 a decision on whether to remove a legal requirement that the Brown Jug liquor store in the Tikahtnu Commons mall at the Glenn Highway and Muldoon Road check everyone's identification before selling them alcohol.

At the urging of the Northeast Community Council, the Assembly last November made universal ID checks a condition of the zoning permit for the new Muldoon Brown Jug.

But at the time, there was a broader movement to get other liquor stores to do universal ID checks as well.

There was a voluntary agreement earlier this year among many liquor stores to check everyone's ID.

That voluntary agreement fell apart this summer, leaving the requirement on only the one Brown Jug store.

Some community council members said there was confusion among their membership as to whether the issue would be up for discussion tonight. That's why the Assembly decided to postpone a vote.
