The Lakina Bridge on the McCarthy Road is closed to all vehicle traffic after a vehicle crossing it this week hit a truss and compromised the structural integrity of the bridge, according to the state Department of Transportation.
The bridge, about 15 miles from McCarthy at Mile 44.3, will remain open to foot traffic, DOT said. Travelers with reservations in the McCarthy and Kennicott areas should contact businesses on the other side of the bridge to arrange transportation to their destinations, according to DOT. There is no parking at the bridge and limited parking at Mile 42, where the road is barricaded, DOT said. Flaggers are in place at both ends of the bridge to enforce the closure, according to DOT. DOT engineers are getting the materials to make emergency repairs to the bridge, but it wasn't immediately known when the bridge would reopen.
