Shellfish collected in some Aleutian Islands waters are too dangerous to eat, warns a group studying the toxins that cause paralytic shellfish poisoning. KUCB in Unalaska reports that the toxin level in local shellfish has grown to about four times what's considered unsafe by health officials. Meanwhile, KTUU reports on a new push for awareness of PCB toxicity in marine mammals and fatty fish in the Bering Sea. Blood tests on St. Lawrence Island villagers show that their levels of the long-banned but lingering chemical are much higher than those of the average person in the Lower 48.
