Freight train traffic is temporarily suspended until the tracks can be repaired, meaning trains carrying fuel, coal, gravel and general freight have been delayed.
Railroad passengers are being taken by bus around Elmendorf Air Force Base between the Anchorage Historic Depot near Ship Creek and Birchwood, where they can catch their trains.
The Hurricane Turn train that runs between Talkeetna and Hurricane Thursday through Sunday, and the daily Coastal Classic and Glacier Discovery trains between Anchorage, Whittier, Portage, Grandview and Seward are not affected.
It was not known how long the tracks would be closed.
