SCHEDULE AND RESULTS
Tuesday's Result
Bucs 3, Glacier Pilots 1
• As the ABL season wrapped Tuesday night in Alaska -- the Anchorage Bucs beat the Anchorage Glacier Pilots 3-1 in a game that didn't mean much because the Pilots already seized the first two games of the Mayor's Cup -- one league team prepared for a tournament Outside.
The Peninsula Oilers' first game at the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kan., was moved up one day because a fellow ABL member, the Fairbanks Goldpanners, made a last-minute decision to bail out of the tournament it has won six times.
The Panners, who were thumped twice Saturday by the Mat-Su Miners to earn the Miners the league crown and drop Fairbanks to second place, alerted NBC officials they changed their mind about attending the tournament.
"I regret to inform you that the Goldpanners cannot participate in the tournament this year,'' Fairbanks assistant general manager Todd Dennis e-mailed the NBC office. "Due to a late-season collapse, and many player losses that cannot be overcome, we just won't be able to participate.''
Thus, the Oilers, the ABL's third-place team moved into the bracket position belonging to the top ABL team participating. Peninsula today plays the Wichita Elite Sluggers.
ABL teams have won 16 NBC World Series -- the Panners have won six, the Pilots five, the Oilers three and the Miners two.
• Down 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Bucs tied the game when Tony Piazza scored on Zach Vincej's RBI double. Bret Atwood scored from third off a Chris Serritella sacrifice fly to go ahead 2-1.
In the seventh inning, Atwood scored off a Glacier Pilots' passed ball to take a 3-1 lead.
Raymond Hernandez won, giving up two hits over five innings. Jung-Hao Hsieh earned the save, striking out two in a perfect ninth inning.
The Glacier Pilots' 2-0 Monday win clinched their fifth straight Mayor's Cup.
