By conquering its crosstown rival, Chugiak hung on to the top spot in the Alaska Sports Broadcasting Network's high school football poll on Monday, while Palmer and South jumped into the top five with impressive victories.

Chugiak retained the top spot by beating Eagle River 27-14 on Saturday, while Juneau-Douglas kept the No. 2 spot with a 37-15 victory over West Valley.

The Mustangs relied on Greg Ghramm's 282 yards and three touchdowns to defeat a surprisingly tough Eagle River squad on Saturday; in two games, Ghramm has compiled 471 yards and five TDs.

"We were prepared, and they still put us on our heels," Ghramm said afterward. "It's a lot tougher when you're on your heels to score."

Scoring has been no problem for Juneau the first two weeks. The Crimson Bears have outscored opponents 92-29, thanks in part to an opportunistic defense.

"Our defense is really feeding our offense some great field position," Crimson Bears' coach Rich Sjoroos told the Juneau Empire. "And I'll give the kids credit because it's one thing to get (field position), but you've got to do something with it.

"Every single time we've gotten good field position we've stuck that ball in the end zone, and if we can keep doing that, we're going to be successful."

Meanwhile, Palmer (1-1) used a 46-0 thrashing of Lathrop, which ran its losing streak to 17 games, to seize the No. 4 slot.

Palmer returned two of Lathrop quarterback Jonah Silva's four interceptions for touchdowns of 68 and 43 yards.

After losing to top-seeded Chugiak in its opener, Palmer hosts Juneau in a pivotal Week 3 matchup at 7 p.m. Friday on Machetanz Field. A day later, undefeated Chugiak and West square off in Anchorage.

South downed defending state champion Bartlett 24-12 on Saturday.

In the small schools poll, Soldotna vaulted over rival Kenai and into the top spot after the Kardinals lost 20-13 to Service, the preseason No. 1 pick among large schools.

"We had a chance to win all the way down to the last play," Kenai coach Jeff Baker told the Peninsula Clarion. "That sums up Kenai football. The kids never quit.

"We really, really learned a lot," he said. "It doesn't matter who they were. We definitely could have, and maybe should have, beat them."

Soldotna shut out Kodiak 28-0 on Friday to extend its unbeaten streak against the Bears to 11 games.
