Valley lakes +++
Trout, grayling, landlocked salmon, pike
With night-time temperatures dipping into the 40s, lake fishing should improve. Fish become more active and feed in shallower water. Along the Glenn Highway northeast of Palmer, Seventeenmile, Long, Ravine, Weiner, and Wishbone lakes all have rainbow trout.
Willow area lakes +++
Trout, char, grayling, pike
North Rolly, Rhein, Christiansen, South Friend and "Y" lakes all have rainbow trout. In coming weeks, cooler weather will turn many fish more active.
Sheep Creek +++
Rainbows, silvers
Silver run has been productive here the last few weeks.
Montana Creek +++
Silver salmon, trout, grayling
Good numbers of silver and pink salmon being caught. Catch-and-release for rainbow trout and grayling. Farther north, another Susitna tributary, Sunshine Creek, has also produced silver limits.
Little Susitna River ++
Silver, pink salmon, rainbows
Silver salmon fishing has fallen off a bit, but fish are still available. Bait is legal. Two of your three-salmon limit may be silvers.
Willow Creek ++
Silver, pink salmon, rainbows
Willow Creek State Recreation Area is a good spot to visit this time of year. Good numbers of silvers are being landed. Rainbows are catch-and-release downstream of Parks Highway.
Jim Creek +++
Silver salmon
Silver fishing is good, but expect to deal with lots of mud and several hundred anglers on weekends. Bag limit is three salmon, two of which can be silvers.
Eklutna Tailrace +++
Silver salmon
Big crowds here, drawn by steady silver fishing and good access. May slow soon, so get here before the weekend. Limit is three salmon. Bait and multiple hooks are legal. Vibrax or pink No. 4 Mepps spinners have proven productive. Shrimp can be effective too.
Rabbit Slough, Cottonwood Cr. +++
Silver salmon
Expect OK fishing at both small waterways. Fish and Game has expanded the weekend-only fisheries to Monday. Beware: Fishing limited to 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. You may be ticketed if you linger.
Fish Creek +++
Strong silver return, with 3,400 fish past the river's weir, with a nice shot of 175 swimming past Tuesday. Fishing legal Saturday through Monday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
REMOTE FISHERIES
Deshka River +
Silver, pink and chum salmon
Silver fishing has dropped off sharply. Since more than 1,100 fish passed the weir Aug. 1, the early return has dwindled to 19 on Monday. Last year saw a bust of silvers in mid-August, so there's still hope. Andy Couch of Fishtale River Guides says, "We've been fishing longer at more spots to catch the fish" but still is delivering limits on most trips. Salmon roe under bobbers and K-13X Kwikfish backtrolled have worked.
Lake Creek +++
Silver salmon, rainbow trout
Silvers and rainbows are available. On the west side of Cook Inlet, silver fishing on the Chuit, Kustatan and Theodore rivers should be good too.
Talkeetna River +++
Chum, silver salmon, rainbow trout
Limits of silvers and chums are coming from the mouth of the Clear Creek tributary.
ANCHORAGE AREA
Local lakes & streams +++
Trout, graying, char, pike, salmon
Bag limit at Anchorage-area lakes is two rainbows, two grayling and two Arctic char per day, with only one 12 inches or longer. Bait is banned in Chester Creek. Campbell Point Lake in Kincaid Park and Sand Lake have been stocked with char. Rainbow fishing in Campbell and Chester creeks is catch-and-release only.
Campbell Creek +
Silver salmon, Dolly Varden
Silver salmon anglers stuck in town are prospecting the legal area upstream of Dimond Boulevard to Fish and Game markers near Piper Street -- except for a section closed to all fishing from Fish and Game markers just downstream of Shelikof Street to Lake Otis Parkway. That section is closed to all fishing year-round. Morning tends to be best.
Ship Creek ++
Silver salmon
Be prepared to work for silvers here, Fish and Game warns. It's the best of the silver-stocked streams near town, but so-so at best. Beware: The creek upstream of the Chugach Power Plant to the Reeve Boulevard bridge is closed through Sept. 30 to protect wild populations of spawning rainbows.
Bird Creek +
Pink, chum and silver salmon
Pinks and chums are dwindling, and the silver run never really revved up. Fishing is legal from Turnagain Arm to regulatory markers located about 500 yards upstream. For a change of scenery, cast a spinner off the mouth of some of some Turnagain Arm clear-water tributaries. Silvers will frequent these areas to rest and clear their gills before swimming on to their natal streams.
KENAI PENINSULA
Deep Creek +++
Silver, pink salmon, Dolly Varden
Beware of recent rainfall that may have left the creek high and muddy. Silver salmon are in the lower river, with cut-plug herring most effective. Dolly Varden limit is two a day and small spinners or clumps of salmon roe are effective. Egg patterns, beads and Muddler Minnows work for fly casters. Fishing upstream of regulatory markers at river Mile 2 is open for Dolly Varden, steelhead and rainbows. Salmon are off-limits there. Limit for salmon -- other than kings -- is three per day and three in possession, only two of which can be silver salmon.
Ninilchik River +++
Silver salmon, Dolly Varden, rainbows
Time silver fishing with incoming tide and watch out for high water problems. Fishing upstream of regulatory markers at river Mile 2 is open for Dolly Varden, steelhead and rainbows. Salmon are off-limits there.
Anchor River +++
Silver, pink salmon, Dolly Varden
Anglers prospecting the lower reaches are catching silvers, especially in the morning on an incoming tide, with 2,064 salmon already past the weir. That pace is well ahead of last year and shaping up as the their best ever. "It was gang-busters on Thursday," Homer angler Jim Lavrakas said of the fishing last week. He expects another spike next week and one the first week of September. Eggs clusters drifted along the bottom have been effective, as well as spinners in sizes 3 to 6. Fishing upstream of regulatory markers at river Mile 2 is open for Dolly Varden, steelhead and rainbows.
Kasilof River +++
Pink, silver salmon, Dolly Varden
Silver fishing has improved and should stay strong the rest of the month. Pink salmon are numerous too. Anglers fishing between slack-water near the Tustumena Lake outlet and the Sterling Highway Bridge are having success.
Russian River ++
Silver salmon, rainbows
Rainbows and Dolly Varden are upstream, and fly fishermen using nymphs below the falls have scored. Red salmon fishing is over, but silvers are entering the river.
Upper Kenai River ++
Rainbows, red salmon
The late red salmon run is ending. Rainbow fishing has gotten better with more salmon eggs available. Side channels are the productive spots.
Lower Kenai River +++
Silver, pink salmon
Silver salmon are spread throughout the river with angler success ranging from fair to good. Pinks are packed into lower river.
Clam Gulch +++
Razor clams
Next decent clamming tide series will be Aug. 23-26, but these are small minus tides that won't provide much time to dig for clams. In general, Razor clams can be found on the sandy beaches from Kasilof to Homer and are exposed on any minus tides. Larger clams may be difficult to locate. All razor clams that are dug must be kept regardless of size.
MARINE FISHERIES
Outside Resurrection Bay +++
Halibut, lingcod, silver salmon
Halibut fishing has been great all summer along the north gulf coast, and lately there has been a revival of silver fishing outside the bay too. Remember, once you harvest a lingcod, you cannot fish inside Resurrection Bay on your way back to the harbor.
Resurrection Bay +++
Silver salmon, halibut, rockfish
Plump 18.89-pound silver that leads the Seward Silver Salmon Derby -- the heftiest derby fish since 2004 -- was caught Tuesday near Hive Island. Silvers are widely spread throughout the bay, with good action at the head of the bay. Four of the top 10 derby fish as of Wednesday came from Lowell Point. For halibut, Eldorado Narrows has proven dependable. Fish and Game suggests taking the youngsters fishing for kelp greenling. Colorful fish, they're related to lingcod and easy to catch -- with no bag limit. They are also fine eating.
Deep Creek offshore ++
Silver salmon, halibut
Seas up to 6 feet have made halibut fishing tough. Silver salmon fishing steadily getting better in most areas, including Point Pogibshi.
Kachemak Bay ++
Halibut, pink, silver salmon, rockfish
Big seas the last few days have made fishing tough, but the forecast looks much better for this weekend. Fish and Game says halibut fishing inside the bay is "poor" with central or southern Cook Inlet a better option. Average size over the past week has been about 17 pounds.
Homer Spit ++
Silver salmon, Dolly Varden
A second run of silvers to the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon should hit this week. Snagging is illegal in the lagoon. A portion of the lagoon will be reserved for anglers younger than 16 years old all day Saturday, with Fish and Game staffers on hand 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. to assist.
Prince William Sound ++++
Halibut, lingcod, shrimp, salmon
Silver salmon are finally headed back to Whittier. Culross, Perry and Lone Islands have all produced nice silver catches, which means fish are bound for Whittier. Good reports from Eshamy Bay too. Bays that support pink and chum salmon runs have seen lots of halibut, with big fish as shallow as 100 feet. Shrimping has been consistently good all summer, and shrimpers can set a maximum of eight pots. Remember, though, you must have a permit. Valdez is seeing a nice silver run right into the port, so you can catch fish without a long run to find them.
