Democratic challenger Andy Schroeder is pulling his name from contention in the Alaska Legislature House District 36 race, less than a week after winning his Democratic primary election unopposed.

In November, he was to have faced incumbent Kodiak Republican Alan Austerman.

Schroeder cited a lack of time during the summer to fund-raise and campaign.

Schroeder is the executive director of the Island Trails Network, a nonprofit that builds and maintains trails on Kodiak Island. He tells KMXT he spent most of the summer out of cell phone range in a tent on the west side of Kodiak Island.

Schroeder did not know if the local Kodiak Democratic Party would run someone else in his place. Party officials couldn't be reached for comment.

House District 36 includes the Kodiak archipelago and the northern part of the Lake and Peninsula Borough.
