Anchorage angler lands beefy silver

(08/30/10 22:48:05)

Anchorage angler Brian Hull narrowly missed breaking into the top three sports on Saturday when he landed an 18.46-pound silver salmon in the Valdez Silver Salmon Derby.

But entering the derby's final week, 10-year-old Kelvin Cann of Fallon, Nev., continued to hold the top spot with his 19.1-pound salmon.

Derby officials said the daily winners have been running between 15 and 17 pounds.

Pat Olson of Valdez said most anglers are fishing 15 to 40 feet deep and the color green seems to be working well. Silvers have moved into Port Valdez and Allison Point.

It looks like George Levasseur's 363.9 pound halibut has a lock on the $15,000 first place prize in the Halibut Derby, but other anglers are fighting it out for weekly first and second place prizes.

Weigh-in for the last day of the derby on Sunday will close at noon. At that time the winners will be tabulated, checks will be cut and derby organizers will prepare for the Spawn 'til Dawn Derby Awards Party Sunday night.

Everyone who bought a derby ticket has an entry in a drawing to win a new truck -- whether they caught a fish or not. Those with season tickets have five entries. Admission to the Spawn 'til Dawn Derby Awards party is free with a derby ticket.
