In June, the White House formed the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling, a group charged with investigating the causes of the explosion and recommending changes to prevent future disasters. The commission has met twice this summer and has held public hearings in the Gulf region and in Washington, D.C.
The purpose of the Anchorage session will be to hear from Alaskans who have experience and/or expertise in oil spill response and recovery and would like to share their ideas.
A pre-session panel is set for 5 to 5:30 p.m. with two researchers: UAA's Gunnar Knapp (Institute of Social and Economic Research, fisheries focus) and University of Alaska Fairbanks' Michael Castellini (School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences).
The listening session is scheduled for 5:30 to 7 p.m. Participants will be asked to limit their suggestions to 3-4 minutes and to focus their comments on ideas and suggestions for spill response and recovery.
This event is open to the public. Parking will be free for those who park in the lot east of the library.
